Moops?

On the train today, ‘Moops’ is everywhere. And not just today. And not just on this train. I’ve been seeing the ‘Moops’ signature engraved on any engravable surface since I started taking the train.

It has a very distinctive design. Always zig-zag-engraved; The top of the ‘M’ barely a curve; A mouth underneath the double o’s to form a smiley face on the same baseline; And the top part of the ‘S’ double as high as the bottom part.

And I’ve always wondered… what is ‘Moops’? or who is ‘Moops’? Is there a gang of ‘Moops’? And would one be called a ‘Moop’? If google cannot define ‘moops’, then ‘Moops’ does not exist. Or does it?

According to the Urban Dictionary, it has two possible definitions:

1) Misprinted word in Trivial Pursuit of Seinfeld episode which is actually Moors. George says to the bubble-boy “It’s not the Moors, it’s the Moops!

2) Term used as slang in some parts of Great Britain. “Moops” or a “Moop” originated from a comical act in many northern industrial towns. Later used to express group of comical or crazy people in jest.

I don’t think train ‘Moops’ refers to any of this, other than perhaps the “crazy people” part.

  1. The Moops are not only alive and well, but you can also buy a t-shirt for 10 pounds sterling featuring the same afore-mentioned creatures.

  2. i was wondering aswell and still trying to find out but i believe it is a ‘tag’ meaning that it is a simple logo or symbol, that people use as simple graffiti.

Since coming to Sydney I have stared in wonder at your “art”.

Every time I spy loops upon an awkward surface, I smile.

By saying “a fellow mooper”, does this mean there are many of you whom write on surfaces?

      Kind regards,

      A fan.
